
December is here—it’s getting cold and already snowing in some areas of Fukushima. Staying in and watching a good Christmas movie may sound incredibly tempting this time of year, but with so many interesting things to do, you may want to experience the best of the season in this region.

Tsurugajo Castle Light History Emaki Digital Art Exhibition by NAKED (Aizu-Wakamatsu City)

Tsurugajo Castle (鶴ヶ城) is one of the most famous attractions in Aizu-Wakamatsu City and a favorite for history lovers. As of December 2022, its museum is temporarily closed, but you can still learn about its history interactively through a projection mapping digital art exhibition called “Light History Emaki” directed by NAKED, a creative studio known for its incredible projection mapping events.

Abukuma Cave Takine Palace Concert (Tamura City)

The renowned concerts at Abukuma Cave (あぶくま洞) are back after three years. There will be different performers every weekend from Sunday, December 4th until Sunday, December 25th (six concerts in total).

Fukushima Prefectural Art Exhibition by People with Disabilities (Sixth Edition) "Kininaru⇆Hyogen 2022" (Inawashiro Town)

Hajimari Art Center (はじまりの美術館) is a museum built in an old sake brewery. “Kininaru⇆Hyogen 2022” (きになる⇆ひょうげん2022) is Hajimari Art Center's latest exhibition displaying works by artists with disabilities.
The exhibition is entered on 気になる, ki ni naru, (things that catch the eye, things that spark our curiosity) and how artists express those through art (表現, hyogen, expression).

Forest of Light Illumination Event at Nijuisseiki-no-Mori Park (Iwaki City)

Nothing says “holiday season” quite like an illumination event. During the Forest of Light Illumination Event at Nijuisseiki-no-Mori Park (21世紀の森公園) in Iwaki City, over 150,000 light bulbs light up the flower beds of the park, a beautiful sight that awes children and adults alike!

There are food trucks on the weekends, so you can enjoy a warm meal while strolling the illuminated fields.

25th Anniversary Special Project "Large Collection Exhibition" at Kiyoshi Saito Museum of Art (Yanaizu Town) Vol. 8

If you visit Yanaizu Town, the birthplace of Akabeko (Fukushima’s famous lucky red cow), be sure to stop by this art museum. Kiyoshi Saito Museum of Art (斎藤清美術館) is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a special year-long rotating exhibition of approximately 1000 artworks.
The exhibition's 8th Vol., on display from November 26th until December 25th, the centers around “the expression of the changing image of winter in Aizu” (会津の冬 イメージの変化が語るもの) and will feature beautiful depictions and woodblock prints on this topic.

- Date: The exhibition runs until April 2nd, 2023 (Sunday), with different themes on display every few weeks. The museum is closed on Mondays and from December 26th until January 3rd.
- Fee: General Admission is ¥510, ¥310 for university students and high school students, and free for middle schoolers and younger children. Some discounts may apply for groups of 15 people or more.
