Discovered in the Edo Period, this hot spring village boasts more than 230 years of history. Originally, the hot spring inns were clustered around the source point, but as the hot spring waters were drawn downstream, it led the development of the current hot spring town.
The quantity of water that flows from the hot spring source is said to be the highest in Japan, with the springwater itself said to be effective against gastrointestinal diseases, rheumatism, neuralgia and skin conditions etc (although this cannot be guaranteed). As a healing hot spring, it is cherished by the locals.
