Experience the beauty and history of Aizu this winter with a special one-day sightseeing bus tour. The Aizu region, known for its stunning seasonal landscapes and rich history, offers a unique opportunity to explore its top landmarks in comfort.

The Aizu Winter Sightseeing Bus takes you to two of the region's most iconic spots: Tsurugajo Castle, the historic fortress that was once the pride of the Aizu samurai clan, and Ouchi-juku, a traditional village that once played host to samurai travelling between the castle and the southern capital.

Along the way, enjoy a traditional lunch of negi-soba (green onion soba) in Ouchi-juku, and benefit from a knowledgeable Japanese-speaking guide.

Tour Details:

  • Price: ¥7,230 for adults (¥6,500 + ¥730 processing fee), ¥5,450 for children (¥4,900 + ¥550 processing fee)

  • Departure/Arrival: Aizu-Wakamatsu Station (guests at Ashinomaki Onsen can disembark there)

Tsurugajo Castle

Arrive at 11:00am. Tsurugajo Castle offers a vivid experience of history, nature, and tradition, with its original stone walls and the iconic red-tile roofs restored in 2011. The castle's museum displays the swords and armor of its lords, while the fifth-floor viewing platform provides panoramic views of Aizu, including Mt. Bandai and Mt. Iimoriyama.

Ouchi-juku

Arrive at 1:20pm. Ouchi-juku, a historic village in Fukushima's southwestern mountains, features well-preserved thatched-roof houses and natural streets that transport visitors back in time to the Edo period, when it served as a vital rest stop for travelers. Designated as an Important Preservation District in 1981, the village retains its traditional charm, with no overhead wires and stunning views from the hilltop, making it a perfect destination to explore history and culture, especially during snow season. (This sightseeing time includes lunch.)

Bus departs at 2:40pm. Arrival at Ashinomaki Onsen at 3pm, then Aizu-Wakamatsu Station at 3.45pm.

This one-day cherry blossom hunting route will take you to two beautiful cherry blossom spots in the central area of Fukushima.  We recommend following this route around mid-April to see the blossoms at their fullest. You will start your trip from Fukushima Station, from where you’ll visit Hanamiyama park first thing in the morning. The great variety of flowers at the park (plum blossoms, cherry blossoms, magnolias, azaleas, etc.) means that the park can be enjoyed throughout the year, although it sees most of its visitors between end of March to early April, when the landscape of the delicate blossoms against the snow capped Mt. Azuma signals the beginning of the spring. This is a wide park and will possibly entail an hour-long hike, if not longer. Bearing this in mind, be sure to wear comfortable shoes and clothes. You’ll then go south to Shirakawa City, where you’ll be able to enjoy seeing delicate flowers against the elegant black-and-white Komine Castle. This itinerary is designed for holders of the Tohoku JR Pass, who will travel between destinations on ‘shinkansen’ bullet trains and local buses (the bullet train fare is covered by the Tohoku JR Pass; the fare for the local buses amounts to an additional fee of approx. 500 yen per person).

Walk through the gardens and grounds of this magnificent castle and marvel at the red-tile roof—the only one of its kind in all of Japan. Inside you can tour the castle keep and see the artifacts of Aizu, let history come to life before your eyes. From the castle, travel to Nanokamachi-dori Street; this quaint area has preserved its early-20th century architecture and is now home to souvenir boutiques and many diners and hidden gems. With that being enough for one day’s excitement, head over to Higashiyama Onsen and soak your travel aches away in the hot springs of Harataki ryokan, which even has its own hot spring source. You’ll love taking a dip in these hot, refreshing, and soothing waters—the outside open-air bath is especially recommended. The next day, why not head over to Ouchi-juku, here you can tour an authentic preserved Aizu village and try local cuisine. The whole area gets really busy in winter and, if you’re brave enough to face the cold, the snow festival is a popular event.

It’s time to visit the dizzying heights of Aizu on this one-day tour that can be enjoyed any time of the year. Travel by train to Aizu-Wakamatsu Station and make your way for Michi-no-Eki Ozekaido Mishima-juku (Roadside Station). At this countryside road stop, you’ll find snacks, local handicrafts and produce galore, not to mention fantastic paulownia wood crafts. Be sure to pick some up. From Michi-no-Eki Ozekaido Mishima-juku (Roadside Station), take a short 10-minute walk to the lookout point for the Tadami Bridge. This is the number one place to look out at the bridge from and you’ll be entranced by the scenery - time your trip right and you might be able to see the Tadami Line train passing over it. The majestic mountains almost seem to hug the bridge and the landmark makes a beautiful contrast against a backdrop of nature. After you’ve finished bridge-watching, head south to ride a ferryboat across a jagged ravine at Mugenkyo no Watashi. The splendor of the natural craggy rocks and trees that cling to them will astound you from your seat at water level. Get a sense of size of these beautiful mountains and cliffs.
